About Simula
Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located outside Oslo, Norway. We are a multi-cultural organization, employing about 140 individuals from 25 countries. Simula conducts ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering, with the main objective of generating new understanding and creating vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value to society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialisation.
Description
Project Description
Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula focuses on robustness and security of ICT infrastructures. This implies research on networks and applications with the aim of making them resilient with respect to failures and changing environment. The Networks department works on resilience in communication networks and applications from a measurement perspective, through prototyping and through theoretical studies.
Responsibilities
We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our team of senior and junior researchers in the Networks department of the CRNA. The successful candidate will mainly work within a nationally funded project called DOMINOS which aims to follow an empirical measurement-driven approach for dissecting and modeling interdependencies between communications networks both at the national level and at the global level. Our goal is two folds. First, we would like to develop a framework for empirically quantifying interdependencies in a network of networks. Such framework will help different stakeholders including regulators, operators, and end users gaining insights into the overall reliability of the systems they manage, own, operate and use. Second, we would like to raise the awareness for the potential catastrophic impact of large-scale failures. Hence, bringing the reliability of communication networks to the forefront of the national and global debate about infrastructures. In addition, we envision that the methods we intend to develop can be reused by research that studies networks of networks in different contexts. For example, biological networks of networks and financial and trade networks. Thus, enabling future opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations.
The postdoctoral fellow position is for two years and the successful candidate is expected to:
- Contribute to devising inference schemes to identify interdependencies between networks
- Investigate the resiliency of and the interdependencies in the global routing system
- Collaborate with the project manager and external collaborators on building a
framework for assessing and improving network observability
- Supervise and cooperate with master and Ph.D. students
