Postgraduate Scholarship in Applied Optics

University of Kent

Supervisors: Dr George Dobre

An EPSRC funded PhD position is available in the field of Optical Coherence Tomography.

The proposed research project will investigate novel methods to increase the speed, range and resolution of a coherence imaging system using a polygon scanner based swept source. Among the areas to be explored are extending the wavelength range of the source while narrowing the linewidth, as well as noise performance. Several polygon mirror designs will need to be considered, mainly based on a 72-facet polygon mirror capable of 66kHz facet repetition rates.

The successful candidate will be based at the University of Kent's main campus in Canterbury as part of the Applied Optics Group, and work under the supervision of Dr George Dobre, with co-supervision by academic partners at partner institutions.

This PhD Studentship is due to start in September 2015.

Entry requirements and funding: Applicants should have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in Physics or Electronic Engineering. This is a EPSRC-badged Scholarship (funding is 50% from EPSRC and 50% from the 50th Anniversary Scholarship funds), which will be offered at the standard UK Research Councils' rate (currently £13,863; to cover living costs) and will additionally cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (currently £3,996 per annum). Candidates must be ʻordinarily residentʼ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship.
