PostDoc position Structure and Dynamics of Colloids in Semi-Solid Flow Batteries

Job specification

One of the research activities of the PCF group (www.utwente.nl/tnw/pcf/) is aimed at characterizing and understanding the dynamics of concentrated suspensions of particles in non-aqueous media. This work is part of the collaborative European InFluENCE project (www.fp7-influence.eu/), aimed at developing new types of (Li- and Na-based) semi-solid flow batteries. In such systems, the electro-chemical reaction and the transfer of charge to the electrodes takes place via particles that are dispersed in a non-aqueous liquid, which allows the fluid to be quickly replaced after power delivery. Key requirements for the battery are that the suspensions can generate high power densities while remaining ‘flowable’ enough for pumping; this means that the composition of the fluid must be optimized. Scientifically, it translates into a need to understand the colloidal interactions, structure and dynamics in the particulate fluid, as well as the interactions of the particles with the wall.

The research in Twente addresses the above mentioned issues by studying the rheology, electrical impedance and particle dynamics, in relation to the particle interactions. Control over the aggregation between particles is a key ingredient. To strengthen this research (already involving a PhD student)

Your Profile

We are looking for a PostDoc who is a skilled experimentalist with a background in physical chemistry or chemical engineering. Experience with colloids, rheology, or imaging in (microfluidic) flow is considered advantageous. Our favoured candidates are creative and like to push boundaries. Since teamwork is key in top-level science, you enjoy working with others and have good communicative skills.
