Our client, based in Brussels, is an international association active in the energy sector. On behalf of their members they act as the focal point for technical, market and policy questions, in their joint fulfilment of their legal mandates, and in the intensive interactions with European Commission, regulatory agencies, associations representing their members and other stakeholders. The Secretariat also plans and executes the communications and advocacy strategies of the organization, in particular for the strategic energy policy questions. The association plays a crucial role to ensure security of supply; completing the largest and most competitive electricity market in the world; and successfully introducing large volumes of renewable energy into the system. The scope and diversity of association’s work has grown rapidly, and is expected to grow further with the implementation of network codes and the current challenging energy policy discussions. Within this context the Board has decided to create a new position that will need to help lead the Secretariat in this further substantial development of the organization’s workDEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL, high caliber people manager with excellent interpersonal skills able to interact at the highest level.

Job description

  • You will work closely together with the Secretary-General to manage the Secretariat of about 80 staff including temporary IT contractors;
  • Your main role is to lead about half of the Secretariat’s business on behalf and under the delegation of the Secretary-General. More specifically (without being exhaustive) you will define and apply strategic alignment, efficiency and consistency in the support for the four internal committees including their IT projects. Key work products of these sections include the Ten-Year Network Development Plans, system adequacy analyses, development and implementation of network codes on connection, market and operations conditions, market integration and transparency projects, the improvement of the members’ operational coordination, R&D coordination, and coordination on regional market and operational matters;
  • You will also substitute for the Secretary-General in all association leadership tasks when necessary, including all kinds of external representation and member support, such as high-level meetings with the European Commission, Members of the European Parliament and other stakeholders, conference presentations…;
  • You will work in the Secretariat in Brussels, report to the Secretary-General, be part of the Secretariat's Management Team and you will actively travel to different European countries.

Profile

  • You have an university degree in engineering, economics, business administration or similar (ideally with a focus on the energy field) and can demonstrate at least 10 years of relevant working experience in an international high demanding environment;
  • You have experience in successfully leading larger teams, preferably internationally staffed, in complex political and/or technical environments (e.g. within electric utility management);
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and a clear interest in communication. In addition you have excellent writing, discussion, negotiation and presentation skills in English. Any additional European language is an asset;
  • You have a passion for energy policy.
