PhD Studentship: Aircraft Turbine Combustion Noise Processing

University of Southampton - Acoustics, Signal Processing and Control, Transportation, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment

DeadlineApplications will be accepted at any time until the position is filled.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Acoustics Group of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR). The position is for a 3-year research programme leading to the degree of PhD.

The successful candidate will join the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) within the Acoustics Group ( http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/fdag/index.htm ). The UTC was set up in 1999 and works closely with Rolls-Royce on a variety of real-world aircraft engine noise problems. This project is concerned with the processing of combustion noise data from a number of whole-engine and rig tests and will involve the development of novel signal processing and analysis techniques. The candidate will also take part in large-scale engine noise measurement campaigns which will involve some travel.

Applicants should have a First Class or Upper Second Honours degree, or preferably a Masters degree, in engineering, mathematics or physics, together with practical experience of acoustic measurement systems.

The studentship fully covers University tuition fees (at EU/UK level) and provides a tax-free bursary at current UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rates, for a three-year duration.

The project will be supervised by Dr Keith Holland ( krh<στο>isvr.soton.ac.uk ) Prospective applicants are welcome to contact Dr Holland to informally discuss the position and to obtain further details about the project. It would also be helpful if prospective applicants can provide a CV.
