Intelligent Signal Processing ASIC Design for the Next Generation of Pixel Devices in New Large Instruments

APC, University Paris-Diderot/CNRS, Paris, France

Position: ESR fellowship within the Marie Curie ITN INFIERI Project. INFIERI contract duration: The ESR Financial Support is 18 months

This fellowship thus applies to candidates that are already or will be soon enrolled in a
PhD in an Institute part of the ongoing R&D project (RD53).

Contract Start: Possibly before or by June 2015.

Application Deadline: The vacancy is open until a suitable candidate has been found.

Description

Project Description
The INFIERI Project implements a European Research and Training Network for developing intelligent devices and tools for cutting-edge applications in Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Medical Physics and Telecommunications. Within the framework of that project, we aim to develop, optimize and use novel high tech tools for applications to the fields covered by this interdisciplinary program with valuable synergy between them.
This ESR project will take part to the R&D aiming to develop the Front End ASIC to process the signal delivered by Pixel devices, at the High Luminosity LHC, in a decade from now. This is the subject of a challenging worldwide R&D collaboration, RD53, with several applications, in the High-Luminosity LHC (ATLAS and CMS), CLIC and MEDIPIX ongoing projects. This ESR will mainly concentrate on the CMS application; it will however benefit from the cross- experiments framework of RD53 and the close contacts between researchers and engineers in INFIERI. Both engineers and researchers aim to exploit the advances in the related high technologies (CMOS submicron technology, 3D and 3D interconnect, etc..) in order to strengthen the functionalities of these devices and make them intelligent devices.
The successful candidate will take part to the following phases of work: i) modeling studies to study several possible scenario for packing/”clusterizing” the hit information, memory distribution in the pixel; ii) layout design in 65nm CMOS technology; iii) studying potential advantages of a 3D interconnect layout with appropriate modeling tools; iv) layout design of a demonstrator; v) Lab test performance studies. Of particular interest also are the low
power consumption, low material budget, high speed performances, compact and high fault tolerance.
During the INFIERI appointment the work will be based at the AstroParticle and Cosmology (APC) Laboratory, in Paris. Stays at FNAL and CERN as well as eventually at relevant other places including industrial firms are foreseen. The interdisciplinary aspects in INFIERI that combines advanced renown international Labs, high tech industrial firms and high-skilled top Academics will allow cross-community valuable work exchanges for the enrolled fellow and enlarged perspectives for her/his career.
The double funding means that the successful candidate will be partly funded by INFIERI and partly funded by another Institute. This fellowship thus applies to candidates that are already or will be soon enrolled in a PhD in an Institute part of the ongoing R&D project.

Site Description
The Laboratory of AstroParticle & Cosmology (APC) is a Joint Research Unit (JRU) formed together with CNRS, University Paris-Diderot, CEA and Observatory of Paris. It is situated in the downtown Paris Campus of the University Paris-Diderot. www.apc.univ-paris7.fr/APC_CS/en www.univ-paris-diderot.fr/sc/site.php
It is a new structure (2005) that comprises more than 200 people (researchers, academics and technical staff) and gathers, in a unique way, experimentalists, theoreticians and science computing staff who are expert in high level imaging and data processing. It is part of the especially highly skilled Educational and Research environment offered by the Paris area. Moreover the links with industrial firms or research Labs (ex: LETI-CEA), CERN, FNAL and high skilled Academics or Engineer Schools in Europe will allow performing this ambitious PhD program with the involvement of local and international experts with which the team is closely collaborating.
