OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
The incumbent will initiate and undertake world-class research in Quantitative Biology and assist in the planning and implementation of scientific activities in Quantitative Biology. Essential responsibilities include:
- To initiate and undertake front-line research in Quantitative Biology, including systems and computational biology and neuroscience. To suggest, develop and realize scientific projects in Quantitative Biology. To maintain scientific contacts and be competitive with the world's best research centers in the corresponding fields. To supervise and coordinate the research work of postdoctoral research scientists.
- To coordinate and be responsible for activities in Quantitative Biology as well as for general training programmes for younger scientists.
- To review applications for associateships, short-term and long-term visiting scientists including, if needed, students of diploma programs and other training programs run in collaboration with other institutions. To maintain relations with scientific institutions in the area of Quantitative Biology both in the region and at the international scale.
- To lecture and supervise students in the diploma programme and/or in other training programmes run at ICTP in collaboration with other institutions.
- To promote and solicit external funds for programs in Quantitative Biology.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Advanced University degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Computer Science or related areas.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- At least 4 years of relevant scientific research experience at national and international level.
- Demonstrated professional experience in the area of Quantitative Biology.
- Experience in the design, implementation and management of scientific projects.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
- Excellent analytical skills. Ability to collect, synthesise and analyse information from various sources;
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment;
- Capacity to build and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders;
- Ability to communicate effectively on complex technical and scientific issues in English.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
LANGUAGES
- Excellent/very good knowledge of English (written and oral).
