The Role

At Oxford Instruments our Mechanical Design Engineers are integral to the design of our new products, sub-systems, assemblies and customer solutions across a range of academic and industrial applications. Based at High Wycombe you will work closely with technologists, system engineers and software developers to optimise engineering solutions for our leading-edge products within our Nanotechnology division. 

Key responsibilities of the role will include (but not be limited to):

  • Be the lead mechanical designer on new product developments;
  • Specify and document designs including, requirement specifications, layouts, detail & assembly drawings, Bills of Material, etc.;
  • Work closely with supply chain and suppliers during the specification and procurement of mechanical parts;
  • Manage engineering changes using official ECR/ECO procedures;
  • Ensure published drawings conform to BS8888;
  • Ensure designs meet with regulatory requirements, primarily CE, RoHS & Reach.

The Person 

  • Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent;
  • Demonstrable understanding of the requirements for designing both high precision electro-mechanical devices and precision engineered products;
  • Proven ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary product development team throughout all stages of a product development project, from concept to volume manufacture;
  • Demonstrable skills and experience using 3D CAD systems (preferably using SolidWorks 3D CAD);
  • Ideally an understanding of thermodynamics and the various methods of heat transfer;
  • An understanding of vacuum systems and the impact on mechanical designs when working on products that operate in a high vacuum environment would be beneficial;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both one-to-one and group situations and is able to articulate technical issues clearly and succinctly with other project team members.
