The Microsystems Centre at Tyndall National Institute has developed a world-leading technology, which allows bulky magnetic components in power supplies to be miniaturised to such an extent that they can be integrated with the silicon power management chip. This technology, referred to as power supply on chip (i.e. PwrSoC), will allow the development of the ‘holy grail’ of monolithically-integrated power supplies (PwrSoC) with a footprint of 1 mm on a side and a profile less than 0.5 mm. The resulting integrated power converter, as a high efficiency replacement for low-cost, linear regulators, will result in much higher system efficiency. Tyndall’s micro-inductor technology will also enable the emerging trend whereby the entire power management circuitry and inductor will be integrated with the application IC or the load (i.e. a microprocessor or DSP chip). Moreover, the high level of integration also enables an increasing level of granularity for powering more complex system on chip platforms to optimize the system performance. Being in a leading position in “on Silicon integrated magnetics”, Tyndall magnetic team has successfully organized the first two International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip in 2008 and 2010 (www.powersoc.org). The workshop attracted more than 120 leading industry and academic players from 16 countries across the globe. It has become a flagship conference in this space for the IEEE Power Electronics Society.
