Role:

Working within the Geotechnical Analysis Team, you will be primarily involved in geotechnical analysis and design, site supervision, production of drawings, specifications and reports and the supervision of more junior members of the team. 

Potentially bringing already established skills/expertise to the group eg seismic design or heavy civils experience, you will have a strong analytical capability including FE analysis. There will be ample opportunity to develop existing knowledge and potentially a technical specialism within the group framework.

You will have a proven ability to take geotechnical projects from site investigations and desk study through interpretation and detailed design will be necessary, together with a strong capability in analysis and excellent report writing skills. Experience with numerical analysis packages (Plaxis and the Oasys Geo Suite or other equivalent) required. Site experience overseeing site investigation and construction of geotechnical designs is essential.

The role is set in a multi project, multidisciplinary, multicultural environment.

Typical responsibilities will include:

  • Geotechnical analysis and design, site supervision, production of drawings, specifications and reports and the supervision of more junior members of the team;
  • Accountable for quality of own work to time and budget and those of team members as applicable;
  • Daily contact with other members of the group and other Arup staff;
  • Regular contact with site investigation contractors and external agencies;
  • Developing contacts with Clients;
  • Experience in seismic geotechnical design would be an advantage;
  • Good communications skills (both written and verbal);
  • Able to quickly develop successful client relationships (both internal and external);
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines is essential;
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills;
  • Willing to turn hand to other work when the opportunities arise;
  • Proven success in contributing to a team-oriented environment;
  • Must be mobile and willing to relocate to other Arup locations for periods of time should the need arise;
  • Travel including some opportunity for overseas work;
  • Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges;
  • Able to work in a multi project, multidisciplinary, multicultural environment.

The candidate must be a team player with good interpersonal skills, an ability to work with minimum supervision and be keen to provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced members of the team.

Requirements:

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Logical methodical approach supported by strong numerical and analytical ability;
  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills (including formal and informal presentation, written communications and reports);
  • Ability to relate and work well with people at all levels within the teams and within the wider office, as well as externally with clients and contractors;
  • Flexible and mobile ie prepared to travel away from base;
  • Significant geotechnical design engineering experience on a range of projects in a consultancy environment to essentials;
  • Experience of leading projects and project teams on geotechnical design engineering within a consultancy environment to essentials.

 Desirable skills and knowledge:

  • Rock Mechanics Design Experience;
  • Some overseas experience would be an advantage;
  • Multi-lingual is desirable (European language is particularly so).

Qualifications:

  • MEng Civil Engineering or good civils based degree with post grad qualification in geotechnical related subject;
  • Chartered with the relevant body.
