PhD Studentship (NRN-funded) in Microwave Photonics Generation Using Low-Cost Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers

Bangor University - School of Electronic Engineering

Applications are invited for a three-year research PhD studentship in microwave photonics generation using low-cost vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers at Schools of Electronic Engineering, Bangor University, Bangor. The studentship is funded by the Sêr Cymru National Research Network for Advanced Engineering and Materials, Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and Welsh Government. The studentship will pay for tuition fees and an annual stipend of at least the standard RCUK rate of £14,210 (2015/ 2016 rate) (EU residents). The studentship is available for as early a start date as may be arranged (no later than 1st September 2015) and must be completed by 31st August 2018.

The student will be undertaking a collaborative project with Cardiff University, Vrjie Iniversity Brussel, IQE and Tektronix. The aim of this project is to explore the generation of microwave photonics using an alternative low cost approach. The project will involve the generation of a broadband, tunable high frequency microwave source based on the period one dynamics of a low-cost vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) subject to optical injection, examining the stability and noise characteristics of the generated microwave signals and testing microwave photonics transmission and reception over a fibre link.

Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (or its equivalent) in physics or optoelectronics, and an interest in carrying out hands-on experimental research. Prior experience of nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor lasers, Matlab and LabVIEW would be highly advantageous.
