PhD Student - Communication and Distributed Systems

JOB DESCRIPTION

Applications are invited by the Communication and Distributed Systems research group at the University of Bern, Switzerland for two PhD student positions with competitive salaries, according to SNF regulations: one in the area of LOCALIZATION OF WIRELESS DEVICES and one in the broader area of COMMUNICATION AND DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS.

Topics and tasks:

The focus of the two positions will be, respectively, on:

  • Localization of wireless devices using software-defined radio systems

  • The broader area of communication and distributed systems, e.g. mobile/wireless communication, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) etc

The ideal candidates will have good knowledge and experience in one of these two areas. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to develop an expertise in diverse areas like algorithm design, data mining, mathematical modelling and analysis etc. Some additional background on the research topics can be found in the following references:

In addition, the selected candidate(s) will contribute to teaching, such as co-supervising Bachelor and Master theses and teaching assistant activities in Bachelor and Master courses, for which excellent capabilities in understanding and speaking of English and/or German language are mandatory.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Requirements:

We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated to conduct quality research, publish in top venues, and pursue a doctoral degree. Candidates should have:

  • a Master Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering from a highly ranked university, preferably with focus on networking or communications,

  • excellent programming knowledge in C/C++ and Java,

  • very good knowledge with operating systems, in particular Linux,

  • strong experience with network simulators,

  • good analytical skills and research experience in one of the areas mentioned above.
