Science Officer

ICSU - International Council for Science

The International Council for Science (ICSU) is seeking a Science Officer to assist with the planning and implementation of ICSU’s initiatives.

ICSU is a non-governmental scientific organization with a global membership. ICSU members include 121 national scientific bodies (mostly national academies of science), 31 International Scientific Unions, and 23 International Scientific Associates. Activities focus on three areas:

  • International Research Collaboration;
  • Science for Policy;
  • Universality of Science.

This position offers a unique opportunity for the right candidate to help ICSU in its mission to strengthen international science for the benefit of society.

Reporting to the Head of Science Programmes, the Science Officer will assist with the planning and implementation of ICSU’s activities, as part of a small team of Science Officers. Examples of work tasks include support to scientific committees, coordination of international meetings and initiatives, proposal preparation, and reinforcing links with partners and members.

The ICSU Secretariat, located in Paris, is a small international team of approximately 16 people and the ability to work in close cooperation with others is important.

ICSU is seeking candidates with the following:

Qualifications and knowledge

  • An advanced scientific degree (Masters or equivalent) in a relevant natural, social, health or engineering science discipline and a broad interest in science;
  • Demonstrated experience (minimum 3 years) in science project/programme development and coordination/management;
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken; knowledge of French and/or Spanish would be an advantage;
  • Good knowledge of MS Office systems, and of electronic databases and websites.

Skills

  • Ability to analyse and summarise scientific information, to draft reports and to make presentations;
  • Excellent organisational skills and the capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and to meet deadlines;
  • Action-orientated, responsible and willing to take the initiative;
  • Good interpersonal skills and readiness to work effectively within a multicultural and inter-disciplinary team environment;
  • Experience of results-based management tools would be a plus.

Preferred start date:July/August 2015

Salary:dependent on the experience and qualifications of the candidate
