Plymouth University has launched the Dartmouth Centre for Seapower and Strategy (DCSS) at the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), Dartmouth. This independent, influential and inclusive Centre meets a growing need to raise knowledge, awareness and understanding of strategic and defence issues as they relate to maritime affairs and seapower in the 21st century. 

DCSS will undertake teaching, research and dialogue activities in order to provide ‘through life learning’ to develop leadership abilities of professional staff officers and practitioners to enable them to operate effectively within an increasingly complex and ambiguous strategic context. DCSS will help inform and shape security policy decision-making by generating education and training opportunities, research, dialogue and debate across the maritime domain.

Based in the School of Government (Plymouth University) the PhD/Doctoral Teaching Assistant post is intended for candidates with interests that are linked to the DCSS teaching and research areas in Strategy and/or Maritime Security.

Eligibility

You will have a good honours degree and/or a Masters degree in International Security and Strategy or a related area, and will be expected to develop an understanding of how seapower relates to strategy. You should possess good communication and team working skills. Prior naval experience would be an advantage but is by no means an essential requirement. A security clearance and adherence to UK Ministry of Defence, and Naval Establishment rules will be required.

This is a part-time position working 22 hours per week (with the remaining time for part-time PhD study) on a fixed-term basis for 5 years.
