EU-ANTARES Flat smart structures for active sound radiation control

Systems for active noise control and active sound control typically use loudspeakers as acoustic sources. In a substantial number of applications there is a need for a flat sound generating device in order to satisfy space limitations due to technical or aesthetic requirements. The research is focused on the development of a flat source structure driven by multiple controlled actuators that can be used to realise a sound source capable of generating low frequency sound of sufficient power to be useful for active noise control applications and audio reproduction.

Description

The research objectives are:
 Development of a modelling approach for energy efficiency and two-directional energy conversion of coupled electrical-mechanical-acoustical systems with energy recovery
 Performance prediction and performance optimization of actuator systems recovering the internal mechanical energy
 Design of a flat smart structure driven by energy-efficient actuators for low frequency sound generation. Validation of the numerical models by means of experimental data
The research can be used to prepare a Ph.D thesis at the University of Twente under supervision of dr. Arthur Berkhoff.
