Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow - Using Truck Sensors For Road Pavement Performance Investigation (fixed term)

The objective of this Early Stage Researcher post is to assess the impact of road network condition on truck fleet fuel consumption. This is of increasing importance to road authorities in helping to determine optimum maintenance strategies. Previous studies have shown that road pavement evenness and stiffness can influence truck fuel consumption but these investigations have involved small numbers of trucks and limited road sites. Modern trucks now carry fuel sensors that can be used to monitor fuel consumption at fleet level. Together with road network condition data, these measurements can be used to verify the previous studies at a fleet and network level. The results can then be used in carbon footprint studies to provide the information needed for road authorities to have confidence in including this factor in maintenance optimisation. See www.trussitn.eu/vacancies (ESR13) for more information.
