ESRF - European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
Grenoble, France
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Experiments Division, the Electronic Structure and Magnetism and Dynamics and Extreme Conditions groups are now seeking to recruit a Beamline Operation Manager (m/f) for Photon-in/Photon-out Spectroscopy, Permanent position.
FUNCTION
Beamlines ID20 and ID26 pursue an ambitious research programme for X-ray emission, X-ray Raman and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy (XES, XRS, RIXS) and lead the development of new instrumentation for improved energy resolution, higher luminosity and increased selectivity (e.g. polarization analysis). The beamlines make the experimental stations available to researchers from all fields of natural sciences. Thus, stable and user-friendly operation is an important objective as well as the combination of the X-ray techniques with standard laboratory equipment (UV-Vis, mass spectrometry, laser, ...) and in-situ sample environments.
Your primary role as beamline operation manager will be to ensure successful operation and timely maintenance of the ID20 and ID26 beamlines. You will provide support to users as a local contact. You will organize and implement the technical developments on the beamlines and participate in research projects as agreed by the scientists in charge of beamlines ID20 and ID26. You will play a major role in the development of the photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy beamlines within the ESRF upgrade programme. You will actively participate in the development of X-ray instrumentation in spectroscopy applications and closely collaborate with other ESRF divisions.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
You should hold a first degree and Ph.D. in physics, materials science, engineering, or in a related field. Experience with X-ray instrumentation related to X-ray spectroscopy, and good experimental skills are essential. Previous experience in design, installation and operation of synchrotron radiation beamlines will be an advantage. You should be capable of integrating a multidisciplinary and international research team.
