Chartered Engineer (Physical Precision Vacuum Engineering)

ESRF - European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

Grenoble, France

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

Within the Technical Infrastructure Division, the Vacuum group is now seeking to recruit a Chartered Engineer (Physical Precision Vacuum Engineering) (m/f), Permanent position.

FUNCTION

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer to join a resourceful team for the ongoing Upgrade Programme in the following fields:

  • Support the accelerator design team by providing vacuum knowledge in terms of technical and procedural specifications for UHV components, materials and vacuum analysis;
  • Follow-up contracts for production of vacuum chambers and vacuum devices;
  • Follow assembly, test and documentation of qualification of prototypes and samples in the vacuum laboratories;
  • Participate to development and qualification of a technical solution for thermal processing of vacuum chambers (in-situ bake-out) for the new storage ring;
  • Planning (shutdown activities for existing facilities and assembly/installation of new accelerator vacuum system);
  • Commissioning of the new vacuum system, failure analysis and trouble-shooting.

The Vacuum Group develops, operates, maintains and upgrades the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems of the ESRF particle accelerators, experimental stations (beamlines) and support labs. In the context of an important upgrade of the main accelerator, the ESRF storage ring, the Vacuum Group needs to reinforce its team.

You should be a chartered engineer or hold a higher university degree (Master, MSc, DESS, Diplom, Diploma, Ingeniera Superior, Licenciatura, Laurea or equivalent) specialised in physical, precision or mechanical engineering. Apart from knowledge in the typical subjects of your field (materials, quality, joining and sealing techniques, CAD) you have a strong interest or a first experience in UHV-relevant methods of cleanliness, surface cleaning and preparation as well as quality assurance.

You bring first experience working as an engineer, ideally three to five years or more where you had to deal with complex technical issues and management of internal and external resources.
