Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, 'Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection'. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The objective of the Division of Human Health (NAHU) is to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.

The Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging (NMDI) Section's primary objective is to enhance Member States' capabilities to use nuclear medicine and other imaging technologies efficiently for managing non-communicable diseases, mainly cancer and cardiac diseases, and for undertaking related basic and clinical research. To achieve those goals, special attention is given to the preparation of educational resources, guidelines and guidance documents.

Main Purpose

T he Division of Human Health is looking to engage a technical reviewer with advanced expertise in preparing and reviewing complex scientific and technical documents and manuscripts in compliance with international scientific editing and publishing standards and the IAEA publishing policies and practices.

As a consultant of the NMDI, the Technical Review Consultant ensures that the publications of this Section meet the IAEA quality standards. The consultant should function as a liaison between NMDI and Publishing Section in order to facilitate and expedite the publishing process of scientific materials. In addition the Technical Review Consultant should assist in the preparation and submission of scientific articles to peer review journals.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Carry out technical reviews of complex scientific and technical manuscripts in English to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals and IAEA publications, in compliance with international scientific editing and publishing standards and the IAEA's publishing policies and practices.
  • Coordinate with the technical staff the preparation and submission of scientific articles to peer reviewed journals.
  • Provide editorial quality control by ensuring the implementation of the IAEA's editorial standards in the preparation of all English-language publications.
  • Liaise with the Publication Section to facilitate and expedite the publishing process to ensure the relevance of the material in a rapidly evolving field.
  • Provide advice and guidance on the preparation of publications that arise out of technical meetings and other activities of NMDI.
  • Edit e-learning modules developed at NMDI.

  • Editing and proofreading

  • Printing/publishing (an asset)

Language Skills

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an asset.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in technical reviewing and/or scientific editing.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation.
  • Proven ability to work within a technical project in close liaison with the project team in an international environment.
  • Experience working in an international, public sector or non-profit organization a strong asset.
  • Analytical skills: Ability to analyze the needs of the project and translate them into workable solutions.

Remuneration

The remuneration for this post is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 240, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided
