Maintenance Engineer

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are seeking to fill a national consultancy position of Maintenance Engineer. The position will be based in the Facilities Management Branch at our Headquarters in Rome, Italy for an initial period of 6 months, with possibility of extension up to 11 months.

WFP has developed expertise in a range of areas including Emergency Planning and Response, Food Security Analysis, Nutrition, Food Procurement and Logistics to ensure the best solutions for the world's hungry. On average, WFP aims to reach more than 90 million people with food assistance in more than 73 countries.

Reporting to the Head of Section and a senior Maintenance Engineer, the Consultant will be providing support and assistance on the management and supervision of all major installations and maintenance services at our Headquarters.

Key duties will include:

  • Ensure the regular maintenance of all major installations, including the identification of problems and the discussion with appropriate and specialised contractors;
  • Prepare tender specifications for the supply and/or maintenance of the site and its equipment;
  • Develop procedures for preventive and routine maintenance of all site equipment and fittings;
  • Make proposals for the selection of new equipment and materials;
  • Supervise and ensure that works done by contractors are performed promptly and according to specifications;
  • Liaise with local utility suppliers;
  • Ensure that fire and industrial safety standards are followed at all times;
  • Prepare budgets for all site related works and monitor expenditures;
  • Prepare periodic reports on the economic and financial aspects of site management;
  • Ensure compliance with WFP's policies, criteria and procedures;
  • Supervise & support staff involved in site management;
  • Provide training and technical guidance in their work;
  • Develop cost estimates and schedules;
  • Review design and tender submittals;
  • Monitor quality and schedules for maintenance work;
  • Monitor energy consumption and recommend measures to realize energy savings and efficiencies;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education:

  • University degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering degree preferred); or relevant building facilities management qualifications. Professional or chartered accreditation by a national or international regulatory authority is desirable.

Experience:

  • At least five (5) years of postgraduate, progressively responsible professional experience in facility management and maintenance with greater independence and decision-making authority;

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Experience and/or training utilising computers, including word processing, spreadsheet and other standard software packages and systems;
  • In-depth knowledge of AUTOCAD required;
  • Knowledge of integrated Facility Management systems is desirable;
  • Knowledge of green building practices is also desirable.

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English and Italian.
