The Role

The Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis is offering an EPSRC/Ordnance Survey co-funded postgraduate studentship available for 3 years from April 2015 to an outstanding individual. The successful candidate will study for a PhD in Realtime Urban Data Spaces. As this studentship is co-funded by the EPSRC and Ordnance Survey via the EPSRC Industrial CASE scheme the recipient will benefit from an enhanced stipend compared to standard Research Council rates as well as generous research expenses, and a three month placement with Ordnance Survey.

STUDENTSHIP DESCRIPTION

PhD in Real Time Urban Data Spaces

The PhD student will use state of the art mixed reality techniques to enhance the value of the current 3D city environments and to communicate city problems and solutions to policy makers, the public and to provide opportunities to service providers. In order to achieve this, the student will create a tool that integrates (using linked data technology) incorporating a multitude of data sets. The result will be a 3D interactive model that policymakers can interrogate to help them test out different possible scenarios.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

We are looking for an outstanding candidate who will already have obtained a Bachelor’s degree, at either a first or upper second level, and a Master’s degree in an appropriate subject such as Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, Architecture, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Economics or a field related to the Built Environment, though other subjects will be considered if the candidate can demonstrate a keen interest in their personal statement. If proof of English is required the minimum qualification needed is IELTS (or equivalent) score of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 scored in each component. This qualification must have been obtained within the last 2 years.
