Background

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, with 189 member National Societies. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, our work is guided by seven fundamental principles; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

Organizational Context

The Health and Volunteering Departments have created the Healthy lifestyle community,www.healthylifestylecommunity.org to engage volunteers and their communities in adopting healthy lifestyles. This initiative is part of the Community Based Health and First Aid (CBHFA) approach to prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), in-line with Strategy 2020 and the IFRC NCD framework. It also builds on the preliminary findings of the Global Review on Volunteering and has the technical support of Google engineers.

Job Purpose

We are looking for a web developer to support the continuous development of the Healthy lifestyle community,www.healthylifestylecommunity.org, a platform to engage volunteers and their communities in adopting healthy lifestyles. The platform was launched in English in June 2014, received a Google research award in November, was launched in Spanish in January 2015 and soon in other languages.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement new features for the Healthy lifestyle community based on the open source platform Course Builder
  • Research and resolve bugs
  • Guide features through implementation, test, refinement and launch
  • Work closely with product manager
  • Provide web design support
  • Provide inputs on new features
  • Maintain code

Experience

  • Experience with Git
  • Experience in web development

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Google App Engine and Google Course Builder

Knowledge, skills and languages

Required:

  • Knowledge of Python, html, css, javascript
  • Curious to understand how things work
  • Perseverant, ready to be challenged, ready to investigate a problem without necessarily the correct documentation
  • Good command of English

Nice to have:

  • Web Design
  • Startup experience

Comments

The consultant will be contracted by the IFRC and the standard contractual terms will apply.

Agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed at cost in accordance with in the IFRC’s relevant regulations.
