PhD Studentship - Integrated Optical Pressure Sensors

University of Southampton

This PhD studentship is CASE sponsored by aerospace manufacturer Parker Hannifin (UK). With an aim to develop miniaturised pressure sensors based on optical fibres, fibre Bragg gratings, and planar integration. The project will involve the development of a new optical fibre-on-planar composite and draw upon microfabrication concepts understood in the field of MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) and apply them to integrated optics.

The research is very hands-on, involving a wide range of disciplines and technologies including fibre optics, optical metrology, computational modelling, laser processing, cleanroom-based manufacturing and material sciences. Data analysis, material characterisation, microscopy and analysis techniques will also be used to complement the research.

The prospective candidate shall work closely with Parker Aerospace team, understanding installation concepts and environmental conditions expected in real-world aerospace operation.  Design and development of components shall be made at the University of Southampton’s world leading Optoelectronics Research Centre, utilising state-of-the-art cleanroom tooling and laser fabrication technology.

We are seeking candidates from a range of disciplines including, Physics, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Interested candidates should have an upper second or higher (or equivalent) and due to funding restrictions, must be UK or EU Nationals, with an interest in optoelectronics and aerospace.

A competitive stipend is offered for this industrial based studentship.

Please apply by 31st May 2015.
