Nuclear Structural Integrity CDT Studentships

The Open University is working with Imperial College London and Cambridge University, in delivering a new EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) aimed at building civil nuclear skills for global markets. The Imperial-Cambridge-Open CDT (ICO-CDT) is supported with almost £4 million from the EPSRC and with the backing of a large range of companies. The ICO-CDT is led by Imperial College London and will train a large number of PhD students over the next nine years.

The primary objective of the ICO-CDT is to train a cohort of PhD students of international quality who are prepared to operate in the competitive global nuclear business and technology arenas, in addition to delivering high-impact research. Students will spend the first year of a four-year programme based at Imperial College in South Kensington, London, studying towards a Master’s degree. The OU PhD students will then transition to research with The Open University. Successful students following that path will emerge with a PhD degree from the OU and an Imperial College Master’s degree.

The Open University can offer several industry (Rolls-Royce, AREVA, EDF Energy) co-sponsored structural integrity related research projects this year (2015) including:

  1. Preventing Failure of Weldments at High Temperature
  2. Creep Studies using 2D and 3D Digital Image Correlation
  3. Stresses Developed upon Precipitation of a Hydride Phase in Cerium
  4. Near Surface Residual Stresses from Manufacturing
  5. Post Weld Heat Treatment of Nuclear Pressure Vessels & Pipework

A full list of projects can be found on the ICO-CDT website with contact details for further information.

Applications should be made through the ICO-CDT websitehttp://www3.imperial.ac.uk/nuclearcdt/apply
