Role Profile

  • Overseeing and promotion of the engineering activities undertaken by the company including both temporary or permanent works and the development of engineering solutions that are high quality, safe, innovative and commercially advantageous.  
  • Undertake the role of Design Manager.
  • To provide safe and cost effective temporary works designs for site and tender teams in accordance with company procedure SC-15. This will include assessment of buildability of the permanent works that Skanska Civil Engineering has been contracted to provide.

Principal Duties & Accountabilities

  • To perform better tomorrow than we did today
  • Management of the design process according to company procedures to ensure that the design of the permanent works is managed and completed to the requisite quality and in accordance with the contract programme and budget
  • Provision of functional guidance and support to practising engineers as appropriate.
  • Involvement at all stages of a project:
    • Pre-qualification: To identify what the clients procurement strategy is relating to the design of the proposed project and indicate where necessary our proposed designer(s).
    • Tender: Assess a suitable designer (if required), check that proposed designer is on company approved list and engage them, brief the scope of works at tender stage, agree the designers fee and recommend the best tender strategy for design.
    • Contract: Agree scope of works with designer, agree deliverables programme, recommend fee proposals for acceptance with Project / Contracts Manager, agree communication lines between site and designer, monitor performance.Manage and record all design changes
    • Post Contract: Designer KPI, contract close-out
  • Provide/manage temporary works designs.
  • Demonstrate compliance with the current CDM regulations.
  • Ensuring that relevant design checks are carried out and check certificates are issued to the site’s TWC in accordance with SC-15.
  • Manage drafting requirements and drawing issues.
  • Assist with the provision of technical training across Skanska Civil Engineering
  • Assist with recruitment.
  • Liaise with P W’s designers to resolve issues of construction method and buildability as necessary.
  • Adherence to Skanska policies and procedures.

Knowledge/Skills/Qualifications Required

  • Degree qualified
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Relevant CSCS Card

Experience of:

  • Value Engineering and design costs, temporary works interaction / design / management
  • Working with designers
  • Knowledge of resource costs
  • Working knowledge of CDM and ACOPs
