The Mobile Health Systems Laboratory (MHSL) in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) of ETH Zurich has an opening for a

PhD Position in Quality Assessment of mHealth Systems

The research project will include the development of novel strategies to detect and improve quality aspects of mHealth systems. This will combine the assessment of signal and sensor quality, real-time reliability tests of data and assurance of quality through personalized machine-user interactions. This will be achieved using a combination of statistical and physiological models, distributed systems, as well as machine learning techniques.  The project will make an important contribution to the reliability, integrity and robustness of health devices used by lay users in remote settings. Employment is expected to begin during early 2015. The application deadline is 31st of March 2015.

A successful applicant will have, or is expected to obtain, a Master’s or equivalent degree with top performance in a technical discipline (e.g. Electrical/Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering, Computer and Communication Science, or Physics). Skills in software (e.g. microcontroller/mobile app programming, signal processing and data analysis in MATLAB, R, or similar high-level language) are required. Proficiency in written and oral English and the ability to communicate with collaborators across a broad range of disciplines is also necessary. A high interest in medical topics and applications is mandatory. Maturity, self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as a team player in a multi-disciplinary, international research team are expected. Above all, candidates should be enthusiastic with a strong willingness to learn new skills.
