The European Patent Office (EPO) is the second-largest intergovernmental organisation in Europe, employing almost 7 000 staff from over 30 countries. Its Information Management (IM) department has some 450 permanent staff, as well as a number of managed service providers, working on IT and information processing, with a professional and proactive focus on supporting the EPO's different business processes.

Within IM, the mission of the Directorate Patent Process is to support business services by helping to implement IT systems for the patent granting process and offering expertise and resources to project teams.

As one of the functional competence centres in PD Service Creation, its role and contribution is primarily to

  • contribute, within the framework of the IT Roadmap, to the re-engineering of the IT landscape which supports the patent grant process
  • provide its specific knowledge and expertise to the projects by understanding the business requirements involved and translating them into technical specifications within the framework architecture provided by the Directorate Enterprise Architecture and Innovation.

Main duties

The IT Architect will:

  • translate business needs and requirements into functional and technical designs for IT solutions
  • design IT solutions that meet defined business needs and are in line with the guidelines and practices set by enterprise architecture and security policies
  • produce implementable architectures for simple or complex systems, select the right combination of tools and technologies for each task, and model the corresponding information management processes in a balanced solution that meets functional, service quality, operability and maintainability requirements
  • provide technical expertise for the overall architecture of patent-process implementation, and ensure that it remains coherent.

The ideal candidate will have

  • proven experience in creating IT solutions and designing application architecture
  • up-to-date knowledge of IT industry and trends in case management systems
  • affinity with technology for three-tier architectures and web-based solutions
  • at least five years' experience in the development and implementation of IT systems
  • a good understanding of processes, alignment of business and IT capability, governance and change management (ITIL)

IM Functional competencies description

Minimum qualifications

Diploma of completed university studies at Master’s level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent professional experience. Excellent knowledge of one official language** and ability to understand the other two. In exceptional cases, excellent knowledge of one official language and ability to understand another. In such cases, a fixed-term contract of up to three years could be offered.

The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of qualifications and relevant experience, supplemented as appropriate by interviews, tests and/or a personality questionnaire.

It is intended to hold the interviews in April in The Hague.

Indicative salary and benefits

The EPO offers competitive salaries, an excellent social package, and varied work in a modern international environment. The net salary for this vacancy ranges from EUR 4 500 to 6 500 per month, depending on experience. The EPO also operates contributory medical-insurance and pension schemes. In addition, depending on their personal circumstances, EPO staff may be entitled to relocation benefits and various allowances.
