Research Associate/Fellow in Engineering Risk Assessment

The University of Nottingham

Faculty of Engineering – Division of Infrastructure, Geomatics & Architecture

£25,513 to £37,394 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £28,695 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Applications are invited for the above post which will be based in the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Centre for Risk and Reliability Engineering based at the University Park campus.

For many safety critical, infrastructure intensive, industries (for example, offshore oil and gas, nuclear and railway) it is frequently more cost effective to operate their systems beyond the original design life than to enter a new build programme. Aging systems experience an increase in their rate of degradation and since the system design is fixed, the condition of the safety systems is then controlled through the effective use of maintenance. To enable the continued safe operation of such systems, models are used to predict the risk of aging safety system failure accounting for the selected maintenance strategy.

A programme of research on the risk posed by operating aging infrastructure and systems in different industries has been established in the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Centre for Risk and Reliability Engineering. The person appointed will be a core part of this research activity. To make sound decisions to establish the maintenance strategy which will most effectively control the risk and consequences of failure requires the development of mathematical models which will predict the degradation process of the assets along with the effect that interventions will produce. Such models can be integrated with other models used to predict the consequences of system failure to indicate the risk posed to the general public and the workforce through continued operation.

Candidates should hold (or shortly due to be awarded) a PhD (or equivalent) in engineering, mathematics, computer science or statistics ideally focused in the field of system safety, risk or reliability modelling, maintenance modelling, asset management or a closely related subject. Evidence of the ability to publish research papers and to present work at conferences is required. Experience in IT and computer programming are essential for this post. Excellent communication and team work skills are fundamental to the success of this project.
This full-time, fixed-term post is available from May 2015 for a period of three years.
