The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Head of Division and Project Manager for the The Integrated Control Systems Division (ICS).

Description of division and position

The Integrated Control Systems Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of Control Systems for the whole ESS facility including Accelerator, Target, Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities, as well as of the Machine and Personnel Protection Systems.

The demand for high availability and reliability of the facility for the neutron science users is a challenge for the Control Systems, and innovative solutions are needed. The Head of Division will lead the team addressing these requirements. During the construction phase, ESS desires participation from in-kind partners to deliver components and/or integration of components to the facility. The Head of the ICS Division is expected to develop the in-kind potential for the ESS Control Systems.

Description of main responsibilities

The Head of the ICS Division leads the development, planning and implementation of the division's scope of responsibilities. He/she provides leadership and professional direction to the staff within the division and he/she will be responsible for performance goals, scope, cost, schedule, and deliverables of the ICS.

He/she contributes to high-level international negotiations, agreements, and contracts relevant to the division.

He/she reports directly to the Technical Director.

Qualifications

The Head of Division is an experienced leader, providing strategic direction and inspiring the implementation of solutions and best practices that address ESS's priorities.

This position requires an MSc degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent knowledge acquired during a professional career, formal competence in project management, plus at least 10 years experience with a minimum of 5 years in a management position.

Experience is required within either software and hardware development, device integration, driver and device support development or embedded platforms development, as well as understanding of availability and reliability requirements for control systems.

The successful candidate has demonstrated financial awareness and the ability to add value through creative technical and/or managerial solutions to complex problems. He/She has shown the capability to propose and promote organisational improvement. He/She has a substantial knowledge of large projects in a collaborative context, preferably of international/European nature. Knowledge of principles and practices in scientific research laboratories is an advantage. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite.

Duration & Location

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
