PhD Studentship: A Cloud Based Intelligent Transport Framework for Schools

Develop an interactive cloud-based intelligent Transport Framework for Schools to capture, analyse and disseminate data in real-time on the school transport network to benefit the drivers, schools, parents and children.

Most people use transportation for day-to-day activities, to schools, work and business movements or social and leisure purposes with 105 out of the 973 trips made per person on school-runs. 8.3 million pupils are enrolled in England schools. There isn’t specific safety models for children enroute to school and home. There could be a number of problems, such as route planning for school vehicles, real time route guidance taking traffic and emergency into consideration, vehicle monitoring and tracking, drivers safety applications for speed and on-board safety measures, warning systems for surrounding vehicles and people. We have been working closely with schools and transport providers and identified a knowledge gap. The goal is to create a framework to capture all defined elements of the knowledge gap.

The school en-route transportation has a wide application in the developed world, however hasn’t received enough attention from researchers and government.

The proposed model in this research will provide a framework to enable communication with all stake-holders. The service providers and the vehicles with tracking-devices will help parents and children to locate their vehicle. The drivers will be notified on safe routes and intelligent bus stops for children. The parents will have real-time access to tracking and other information available to them in case of emergency or normal service delivery.

The framework and the model will be tested in Herts, Beds and Bucks counties in the first phase; locating all vehicles in these counties providing school service on a digital map tracked by the framework. The framework mobile application will be made available to parents and school in the first 18 months of the project and user data will be captured and analysed in the subsequent phase of the PhD.

Outcomes: The outcome will be captured in our framework and implemented as a test-bed. This involves building the interface to capture a number of factors including static and dynamic information which link to software driven tracking technology, mapping, business and process automation.

What does the funded studentship include?

Funded candidates will receive a maintenance grant of £14,000 per annum (unless otherwise specified), to cover their living expenses and have their fees waived for 36 months. In addition, research costs, including field work and conference attendance, will be met.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates must satisfy the University’s minimum doctoral entry criteria for studentships of an honours degree at Upper Second Class (2.1) and/or an appropriate Master’s degree. An IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum (or equivalent) is essential for candidates for whom English is not their first language.
