Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is seeking a highly motivated IT Systems Engineer with a universal skill set to join its in-house IT team. Headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany, EMBL offers a unique opportunity to acquire professional experience in an international, scientific, English speaking environment. Together with his team the IT Systems Engineer will be responsible for administration and continuous improvement of the EMBL high-performance IT infrastructure. The main responsibilities will include:

  • Management of multi-tiered high-end data storage, backup and archiving infrastructure
  • Administration of large-scale virtualised data centre infrastructure
  • Integration of internal and external cloud resources
  • Management of corporate messaging
  • Administration of enterprise directory, identity & access management
  • Ensure systems and software security
  • Technology evaluations; rapid prototyping
  • Providing excellent support for our internal and external users
  • Tracking and documenting support events and infrastructure development to ensure excellent service quality and end user satisfaction
  • Continuous improvement of our IT infrastructure and support process based on the needs of EMBL users and stakeholders

The position will provide opportunities for continued training and development of professional and personal skills. The successful candidate will join the IT Services department and report to the Manager IT Operations.

Qualifications and Experience
In addition to a degree in computer science or a related subject, the successful candidate must have at least 3 years professional experience in managing a medium to large sized heterogeneous IT environment. Previous systems administration experience with multi-Petabyte high-end storage, high-performance computing, data centre virtualisation, cloud computing, corporate messaging and/or database systems are highly desirable. Preferably s/he has been exposed to using technologies such as NetApp, TSM, VMware, OpenStack, AWS, IMAP, LDAP, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres or configuration management tools. The systems engineer must have a professional Linux system administration background, advanced Perl/Python/Shell scripting experience and strong capabilities to integrate, automate and monitor a heterogeneous IT environment using standard technologies. The ideal candidate has a service-oriented attitude, is well-organized and able to work to tight deadlines. Good interpersonal and communication skills and excellent working knowledge of English are required to succeed in this job, German or French language skills would be an asset.
