Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is seeking a highly motivated IT Project Manager with a universal skill set to join its in-house IT team. Headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany, EMBL offers a unique opportunity to acquire professional experience in an international, scientific, English speaking environment. The IT Project Manager will serve as an expert in managing a portfolio of multiple small- to medium-scale EMBL IT projects from the original concept through the final implementation. The main responsibilities will include:
- Lead IT projects to successful conclusion by managing all aspects of project management, including project planning, execution, timing, functionality, quality, communication and cost.
- Analyse requirements together with EMBL stakeholders, facilitate scope and manage stakeholder expectations
- Create and maintain project deliverables leveraging appropriate methods and practices to manage and control the project.
- Support IT management in capacity planning and agree assignment of internal project resources
- Oversee implementation projects and service contracts with external resources
- Coordinate projects EMBL IT carries out together with other international research organisations
- Handle communication between stakeholders, the project team and senior IT management.
- Monitor day-to-day execution ensuring projects are on schedule and within budget; identify and manage project risk
- Track and report project status on a regular basis, including issue escalation to stakeholders and IT management.
- Document delivered solutions
- Continuous improvement of our IT infrastructure and support process based on the needs of EMBL users and stakeholders.
The position will provide opportunities for continued training and development of professional and personal skills. The successful candidate will join the IT Services department and report to the Head of IT Services.
Qualifications and Experience
In addition to a degree in computer science or a related subject area, the successful candidate must possess 3+ years of related business experience (project manager and/or equivalent), preferably in managing small- to medium-scale heterogeneous IT projects. S/he has a thorough understanding of generic project life cycle management controls; understands the Software Development Life Cycle principles. S/he is an excellent team player and also has the ability to manage and delegate work as part of a team. Agile experience would be an asset. The ideal candidate would have business analysis or related experience in software integration within heterogeneous IT environments; has a general understanding of leading ERP and CRM systems, such as SAP, Salesforce.com, Oracle, etc. Having general knowledge of web technologies (HTTP, JS, XML, web services, etc.) and some experience with SQL databases technology would clearly be an asset. S/he has an excellent customer focus, attitude and excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate is well-organised and able to work to tight deadlines. Good interpersonal and communication skills and excellent working knowledge of English are required to succeed in this job, German or French language skills would be an asset.
