PhD Stipend in Information flow in networked control systems (8-15006)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Electronic Systems a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from May 1, 2015.

Job description

There are several fundamental issues, which make the understanding, design, and analysis of dynamical systems over networks inherently difficult. Due to feedback, processing the current sample affects the requirements on the future processing. Large delays can generally not be tolerated and the individual system components need to be of zero- or at least low-delay. Processing the signals (such as quantization) leads to non-linear distortions and the signals within the feedback loop become non-linearly related to the signals that are external to the feedback loop. Packet dropouts and packet delays affect the system dynamics in a possible time-varying manner, which renders the overall system non-stationary.

The scientific objectives of this PhD research programme are to extend causal information-theoretic notions such as directed information to reveal fundamental limitations in data-rate-limited closed-loop feedback systems.

The successful candidate holds a master degree in information theory, control engineering, signal processing or applied math, and has in-depth knowledge of dynamical systems and statistical signal processing, experience with state-space models and Kalman filtering, and knowledge of information theoretic concepts.

The position is financed by VILLUM FONDEN Young Investigator Programme, and the research will be carried out at Aalborg University, Denmark, in the Department of Electronic Systems, Section on Information Processing.

You may obtain further information concerning scientific aspects of the position from Associate Professor, Dr. Jan Østergaard, Department of Electronic Systems , phone: +45 9940 8693, email:jo<στο>es.aau.dk , web: ttp://kom.aau.dk/~jo

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
