PhD Stipend in Information flow in speech communications (8-15007)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Electronic Systems a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from May 1, 2015.

Job description

Human spoken communication is the process of passing a message through a time-varying, non-linear, and noisy transmission channel, to a receiver. Although human communication is by no means a new invention, and a substantial amount of knowledge is available e.g. with respect to the speech production process, room and head/torso acoustics, mechanisms of the auditory periphery and auditory perception, surprisingly little is known about the information flow in human spoken communication across dynamic transmission channels in general, and in particular when signal enhancement devices such as hearing aids are part of the communication chain.

The scientific objectives of this PhD research programme are to estimate the causal information flows in human spoken communications, and provide a link between speech intelligibility and estimation theory.

The successful candidate holds either a master degree in statistical signal processing, information theory, (or a related discipline) and has knowledge of auditory perception (and/or sensory perception in general), or holds a master degree in speech processing, auditory perception, (or a related discipline), and has knowledge of information theory. In addition, knowledge of speech production theory, room and head/torso acoustics, and estimation theory is an advantage.

The position is financed by VILLUM FONDEN Young Investigator Programme, and the research will be carried out at Aalborg University, Denmark, in the Department of Electronic Systems, Section on Information Processing.

You may obtain further information concerning scientific aspects of the position from Associate Professor, Dr. Jan Østergaard, Department Electronic Systems, phone: +45 9940 8693, email:jo<στο>es.aau.dk, web: http://kom.aau.dk/~jo .

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
