Devices and tools for minimally invasive cardiac surgery interventions

We are pleased to invite applications for up to 15 fully funded PhD positions for 3 years starting early to mid-2015 within the context of MUSICA project (www.musica2020.eu). The MUSICA Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN-ETN) is a major European research and training consortium in the framework of Horizon 2020 programme focused on cardiac health. The MUSICA consortium consists of a team of universities, companies and hospitals from 4 EU countries (Italy, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Belgium). The successful applicants will be physically located and work at the hosting institution, with planned secondments at other institutions of the consortium.
The candidate will be based in the Sorin Group Italia facility in Saluggia – Italy, but will also work for extended secondments at Politecnico di Milano (Milano, Italy), FEops Bvba (Gent, Belgium), Materialise NV (Leuven, Belgium) and Bioengineering Laboratories S.p.A. (Cantù, Italy).

Description

The candidate will mainly perform his/her activities within the Heart Valve Prostheses R&D team. Activities will include:
Product Design:
• How to translate Customer Needs into Design
• Key Materials and Technologies
• Design approach for cardiovascular implantable devices
• Software and tools for product design
Product Engineering:
• How to scale up from prototypes to industrial manufacturing
• Key manufacturing processes&equipments
• Process qualification and validation techniques
Product pre-clinical testing:
• How to assess product safety and performance
• Key regulations
• Key in vitro/bench testing methods and equipments
• Key animal models
• Protocols and reports drafting techniques
After the completion of the first phase, the Candidate will be included in one of the Project Teams, in order to be exposed to “real world conditions”. The Candidate will be exposed to growing responsibilities, according to demonstrated behaviours and obtained results.
Requirements
Applicants should have a University degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines (but other technical university background could also be considered). Applicants with Masters related to the biomedical/cardiovascular field, or prior experience in this area, will be given highest preference.
Candidates will be required to meet the Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria. In particular, at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, candidates must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate. They are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the start date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.
This position is available from 1st July 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be offered on a full time fixed-term contract for a period of 12 months, renewable up to a total of 36 months.
