Full-time, Fixed-term for 21 months
Applications from suitably qualified and well motivated individuals are invited for the position of Constellium Research Fellowship in direct chill casting of aluminium alloy in BCAST at Brunel University London.
BCAST is a speciality research centre focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the EPSRC Centre – LiME). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and solidification processing. BCAST is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.
The successful candidate will work on the development of novel DC casting processes and advanced aluminium alloys for automotive applications.
The research will include:
- Development of novel DC casting technology for the production of high quality DC cast billets;
- Understanding of microstructural evolution during the novel DC casting process;
- Development of advanced wrought aluminium alloys for automotive applications to take full advantage of the novel DC casting process.
The applicant is also expected to interact with other researchers in BCAST and research engineers from industry.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in materials science and engineering, physics or another suitable engineering discipline, and should have a sound background in physical metallurgy. Research experience in solidification processing of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using various microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of mechanical testing of metallic materials are essential. In addition, the applicant should have good communication and presentation skills and be a team player.
