Research Fellowship in Aluminium Alloy Processing 
Full-time, fixed-term for 3 years

Salary (Grade R1): £33,508 - £39,560 pa incl. London Weighting

Applications from suitably qualified and well motivated individuals are invited for the position of Research Fellowship in aluminium alloy processing in BCAST at Brunel University London.

BCAST is a speciality research institute (SRI) focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the EPSRC Centre – LiME). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and solidification processing. BCAST is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.

The successful candidate will work on the development of aluminium hybrid structures for automotive applications. The research will include: (1) development of novel casting technologies for the integration of extruded sections with cast components to form hybrid structures; (2) evaluation of the hybrid structure performance and (3) demonstrating selected hybrid structures for automotive applications. He/she is also expected to interact with other researchers in BCAST and research engineers from industry.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in materials science and engineering, physics or another suitable engineering discipline, and should have a sound background in physical metallurgy. Research experience in solidification processing of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using various microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of mechanical testing of metallic materials are essential. In addition, he/she should have good communication and presentation skills and be a team player.
