Purpose
The Senior Manager will be fully competent and experienced in undertaking all tasks related to project life cycle development and implementation, including project origination, structuring, execution, implementation, technical cooperation, donor financing, and monitoring, related to mainstreaming the established Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI) and the new Sustainable Resource Initiative (SRI) into banking operations.
The position will report to the Senior Banker, in charge of the New Product Development and Innovation (NPDI) Pillar, and to the IBEE Pillar Head / Senior Engineer. The Senior Manager is one of the Banks primary representatives with clients, government authorities, and other stakeholders, while internally, the Senior Manager is responsible for ensuring that projects are executed, implemented, and monitored in line with the procedures, policies, and strategies of the Bank, specifically contributing to technical business planning and providing operational expertise. The Senior Manager contributes to setting the teams strategy and targets and plays a critical role in meeting them.
Background
The EBRD has invested more than 16.4 billion in 928 sustainable energy projects since the SEI commenced in 2006. The main goal of the EECC team is to mainstream the SEI/SRI by promoting sustainable energy and resource investments (investments in climate change mitigation and adaption, renewable energy, energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency and waste minimisation) throughout the Banks operations.
The role of the Product Development Team within the EECC team is to i) develop and implement new financial products for financing sustainable energy projects, in collaboration with Sector Banking Teams; ii) lead on the provision of technical support to clients and other external and internal stakeholders, and iii) support government authorities and other relevant stakeholders at all levels in countries of operations in improving the policy framework to promote sustainable energy and resource use.
The role of the IBEE Pillar within the EECC team is to i) provide support to other Banking Teams to identify, develop, and implement, SEI/SRI initiatives; ii) lead on the provision of technical/industrial support to other banking teams, clients, and other external and internal stakeholders iii) support government authorities and other relevant stakeholders at all levels in countries of operations in improving the policy framework to promote sustainable energy, climate mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable resource use.
The Senior Manager will take responsibility for effective leadership of his/her project activities, with a focus on bringing technical and business expertise related to identifying, and developing sustainable resource initiatives within banking projects, including informing, persuading and convincing banking team members of how they will improve project quality and transition impact, with a specific focus on buildings.
Senior Managers build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders in relation to business development, project execution, implementation, and monitoring, policy dialogue, co-financing arrangements, and donor financing.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Work as a senior project team member to develop new SEI/SRI financial products and contribute to all other project aspects including project structuring and execution, implementing, and monitoring.
- Work as a senior project team member at both project and sector level, to identify investment opportunities for climate and sustainable resource technologies for buildings (energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency, waste minimisation), contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution.
- Lead the identification and structuring of capital investment appraisals of sustainable resource investments and review the associated implementation and operational risks.
- Take a proactive role in marketing and business development efforts in the relevant sector and countries to build reputable market contacts to develop deal flow and cross selling of the Banks competencies.
- Oversee related due diligence processes ensuring they meet the Banks standards.
- In cooperation with relevant units within the Bank, conduct selected policy dialogue projects and contribute to policy dialogue activities in a leading role or support function with local authorities and industry associations to improve the investment climate and strengthen the EBRD impact in the area of resource efficiency.
- Structure and manage outsourced assignments for technical and policy services to clients. These will include project preparation and policy advice.
- Identify necessary support, in the form of relevant information or documentation, towards efforts to procure grants and technical cooperation funds to complement investment projects or required as part of policy dialogue effort.
- Supervise, coach and mentor more junior staff
- Depending on specific expertise or skills, take on additional strategic tasks for the team as a whole, including management of geographic or business segments and/or expanded business development responsibilities and/or expanded project portfolio management responsibilities, and/or expanded administrative / management task
Knowledge, Skills, Experience an Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., engineering, economics, environment, science); a combination of technical and commercial skills is advantageous.
- Extensive relevant, technical and commercial work experience gained from: i) an engineering and/or consultancy organisation; or ii) a company operating in the energy, chemical, energy efficiency in buildings or manufacturing sectors; or iii) a bank, equity fund, advisory services, corporate finance firm; with a demonstrable track record of successful project development.
- In-depth knowledge and experience with sustainable resource initiatives with a very strong awareness and interest in the related issues (water efficiency, waste management, process optimisation, materials efficiency, etc.).
- Proven track record in managing consultants and related assignments.
- Sound understanding of business and finance principles (including corporate credit analysis).
- Good understanding of policy analysis and policy formulation in the areas of climate change, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, technology transfer and energy.
- Experience in emerging markets, including EBRD Countries of Operation.
- Computer literacy and excellent written/oral communication skills in English are essential and languages in Countries of Operations are advantageous.
- Ability to operate consistently within business guidelines and ethics and work sensitively in multicultural environments, building effective working relations with clients and colleagues.
- Self-motivated, ability to work to and meet tight deadlines and to plan and organise work unsupervised in a logical and efficient manner.
- Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in verbal and written formats, appropriate to the audience at the time and confidence in handling senior stakeholders.
