We are inviting applications for the position of Secretary General, GEM’s organisational leader and chief executive. The position is full-time and based in Pavia, Italy.
The role of Secretary General has a predominantly external focus, with the responsibility to grow the organisation’s leadership in collaborative assessment and reduction of earthquake risk. The successful candidate will demonstrate an extensive track-record of success leading organisations or international initiatives in the domain of science policy or risk reduction.
The GEM Foundation is a public-private partnership comprising 11 renowned international companies mainly from the insurance and engineering sectors, 15 public agencies and international associates such as the OECD and Worldbank. GEM develops open, accessible tools and information for transparent earthquake risk assessment & modelling worldwide and facilitates their use to help inform better policy and action for disaster risk reduction. The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in geophysics, engineering, political science, economics, or a related field, and a minimum of fifteen years’ experience in organisational leadership with increasing levels of authority. We are seeking an individual who is fluent in English, has excellent communication skills, a demonstrated track record of diplomatic consensus-building among diverse stakeholders, and familiarity with disaster risk reduction programmes, such as multi-national hazard and risk mapping/modelling, or risk transfer/mitigation by international development agencies, or catastrophe risk management in the insurance domain.
