PhD Studentship: Embedding micro sensors in extreme environments

University of Warwick

Industrial Supervisor: Chris Lyness (JLR)
Academic Supervisor: Dr Rohit Bhagat, Dr Andrew Moore and Prof. Richard Dashwood

Project Overview:
This project focuses on advance sensing of electrical, magnetic, thermal and mechanical behaviour in electrochemical devices. This will be achieved by embedding sensors during the manufacture of the electrochemical devices.

Because of the nature of the measurement platform, special-to-type sensors and novel implementations will need to be developed – suiting those with a keen imagination.

This research has significant industrial impact allowing battery packs to be optimised for electrical performance - fault tolerance - robust structure – lifetime optimisation - light weighting and design for re-manufacture.

Objectives:

  • Become familiar with types of sensors that may be used within lithium ion battery pouch cells.
  • Develop novel implementations/new sensor types.
  • Learn how sensors can be applied during the manufacture of lithium ion batteries.
  • Understand internal changes that may take place within cells under mechanical, thermal or electrical load.
  • Measure state of health and predict/extend end-of-life.

Key Warwick Facilities
WMG’s Energy Innovation Centre provides the facility to take active materials, coat electrodes, manufacture lithium pouch cells, and electrically and mechanically characterise them. Other facilities include Power Electronics and Motor Dyno Laboratory, Electronics Laboratory, CT scan facilities and nanoparticle manufacture.

Candidate Requirements:
Due to the source of funding only UK or EU nationals are eligible for this position.

Applicants should have a good UK honours degree or equivalent, in Physics, Electronics Engineering, or other relevant discipline. A demonstrable strong interest, or experience within these degree areas of sensor technology and small signal analogue or RF electronics is desirable.

Experience of conducting experiments is also desirable.
