Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

The Laboratory for Biointerfaces aims to understand, characterise and steer interactions of bio-molecules, bacteria and human cells at surfaces for materials-based healthcare solutions. We combine material and biological science for novel solutions through steering the properties and nature of the biointerface. We thrive to provide key contributions to novel antifouling, antibacterial and functional/ biocompatible materials for therapeutic and diagnostic use.

Your tasks

  • You need to lead with competent scientific and entrepeneurial guidance a team of scientists, PostDocs, PhD students and technicians and you actively collaborate with other Empa labs, partner institutions and industrial partners
  • Create, functionalize or modify materials for biomedical applications
  • Your team achieves international recognition in the field of bio-molecule-material interface science
  • You successfully present your results in scientific journals and at international conferences

Your profile

  • Experience in leading a scientific group
  • PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering or related field
  • Strong background in functionalization/ modification of material surfaces
  • Analytical chemistry/ biochemistry
  • Successful acquisition of projects (SNF, CTI or similar)
  • Good knowledge of English and German is requisite (written and oral)
