PhD Student in Knowledge-based Software Engineering

The vision of the School of Engineering in Jönköping University is to be a European leader in developing and spreading new technology and knowledge that together reinforce the international competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Research in the School of Engineering is targeted at industrial product realization, especially in cooperative applications with SMEs. Information Engineering is one of the four established research environments in School of Engineering.

Information Engineering Research Group:

The Group was established in 2002 and currently consists of 5 PhD students, 1 Assistant Professor, 3 Associated Professors and 1 Full Professor. The Group continues to grow! Now we are recruiting a PhD student in Knowledge-based Software Engineering.

The current research focuses on:

  • Ontologies are considered as a key technology for representing knowledge and describing the meaning of information. Development methodologies for ontologies, ontology patterns, and using ontologies for software development form the current areas of interest. The software engineering community has recognized ontologies as a promising way to address current software engineering problems.
  • Enterprise modeling approaches and advanced standardization activities can be considered as suitable means to capture context information for individuals and organization units. Furthermore, we investigate mapping between context models and ontologies.
  • Model-based software engineering aims at continuously using models during all phases of software engineering.

Job description

Software testing is an important activity in software development life cycle. One of the main issues in testing is the generation of an optimal set of test cases to exercise software, an activity which is both difficult and expensive. For the past 20 years, the research community has been proposing solutions to alleviate the burden by the automation of test case generation. The research work of the PhD student will focus on how ontologies can help to automate the generation of high-quality test cases. The PhD work will be carried out within a new research project, financed by KK-Foundation, in collaboration with industry partners.

The position also includes teaching or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of the total working hours.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Master’s Degree or corresponding degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics or in a related discipline at the time the employment starts, and have good programming skills. Knowledge and experience in Ontology Engineering, Software Engineering, and Software Testing are of advantage. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter, excellent analytical and communication skills, orally as well as written, ability to work both independently and in teams are needed. Oral and literal proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.
