Fully funded. The duration of the Studentship is 42 months and the funding covers fees and stipend at the standard School rates. For a September start date in the academic year 2015/16 this would be an annual stipend of £15,381.

Studentship description

The Eric Birse Trust was founded in 1984 by the family of Dr Eric A B Birse to commemorate his life and work. The primary intention of the Trust is to fund, via The Eric Birse Studentship, PhD research in the field of Chemical Engineering. he Studentship is open to all who wish to work in this discipline subject to meeting the Eligibility criteria and to complying with the Application Procedure both of which are detailed below. The successful applicant will become a member of the Institute for Material and Processes in the School of Engineering.

To date the Studentship has supported seven PhD students each of whom has progressed to have successful careers in industry and academia.

Eligibility

Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree.

Selection Procedure

The School’s Postgraduate Progression Committee, the Director of Discipline for Chemical Engineering and the Head of Materials and Processes will meet in February 2015 to select the successful project. The Studentship will commence in September 2015.

Dr Eric A B Birse, OBE: Eric Birse was for some 30 years until his retirement, Chief Chemical Inspector for Scotland with responsibility for advancing both the regulation and implementation of pollution control measures within Scotland. A PhD physical chemist from The University of Edinburgh, he earned considerable respect from his peers for the rigour and quality of his scientific analysis and from Government Ministers, administrators and industrialists for his pragmatic approach to the control of industrial emissions.
